What does the emission (evaporative emissions control, or EVAP) system in a Mitsubishi do?
It manages gases released from the exhaust. Many different parts make one up; they can include an engine computer (an engine control unit or engine control module/ECM), the fuel tank, the fuel line, a control solenoid, a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, an oxygen sensor (or sensors), and hoses. When the system doesn't work right, emissions increase, your vehicle will start to pollute the environment, and it'll fail an emissions test ("smog check").
Why is my emission system (Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator/MIL) light on?
Some reasons include a clogged air filter, ignition coil failure, a faulty catalytic converter, spark plugs gone bad, engine valve or piston damage, a bad mass airflow sensor, a defective vacuum hose, a loose gas cap corroded wiring and connectors, and a fuel injector going out. Run an inspection to figure out the actual cause.
What happens if I ignore a Check Engine light?
That depends on why it's lit up. Usually, it's because of a part or systems failure of some kind; let one go long enough, and you'll end up at a Mitsubishi dealer for repairs. They can be expensive, so address issues sooner rather than later.
