What kinds of gauges can a car have?
Analog, digital, or both. The list can include a speedometer, an odometer, and a tachometer, plus a fuel gauge, an oil pressure gauge, and a temperature gauge. Some sports cars -- Mitsubishi Eclipse, for example, or Mitsubishi 3000GT -- can also have a boost gauge. Put simply, a vehicle can have gauges for nearly every system, warning lights to indicate status, LCD screens that display readings, or a combination thereof.
What does each gauge do?
Speedometers measure how fast cars go, often building in odometers to show total mileage traveled. Tachometers measure and show engines' rotational speeds (rpm); they're most useful in models with manual transmissions/stick shifts, where you'd want to change gears at the rpm that's best for either fuel economy or speed. Fuel gauges show how much gas is in fuel tanks; oil pressure gauges monitor motor oil pressure and show proper tolerances; temperature gauges keep track of engines' temps and can indicate overheats; and boost gauges indicate air pressure in either intake manifolds or turbochargers.
The Check Engine light is on in my Mitsubishi. What does that mean?
The onboard diagnostic (OBD) system has found something wrong, and you'll need to do something about it. The causes of the light showing up on the dash range from bad spark plugs, a failed catalytic converter, and faulty wires or ignition coils to malfunctioning or damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensors, a fuel or oil problem, or even a loose gas cap. You could even have some other engine issue. Plug in a code reader or an advanced scan tool, do an inspection, and replace any parts the results call for.
What are the causes of failing gauges in a Mitsubishi?
Most often, a blown fuse, bad ground connections, loose wires, a bad sending unit, or instrument cluster failure. If your gauges aren't working right and you aren't sure why (or what else may be going on), a Mitsubishi service center can help.
