Mitsubishi Floor Mat & Carpet Care 101

Want to save the $1,000 or more otherwise spent replacing the damaged floor pans, plastics, and upholstery in your Mitsubishi? Take the best care of its floor mats possible: don't let them wear out, tear, crumple up, and end up exposing your car floors to dirt and muck. The best way to do that: keep the mats clean; here's how.

Carpet Floor Mats

First, take the mats out of the car and shake them out, getting rid of dust and debris. Then, vacuum both sides of the mats (with a Shop-Vac, if they're wet). Now, grab a scrub brush and scour the mats with either soap and water, oxygen bleach and water, or a stain-fighting commercial spray-on carpet cleaner. Finally, let the mats dry completely before replacing them in the car.

Rubber/Vinyl Floor Mats

First, grab a garden hose or a brush, soap, and water. (Avoid harsh chemicals; they can damage rubber.) Then, remove the mats from the car and either spray or scrub them down. Then, drip-dry the mats or use a towel to wipe them off, and put them back in the car. (Don't spray them with silicone; it'll make them slippery, making it easier for your foot to slip between pedals or the mat to slide and get lodged under one, and putting you and your passengers in danger during a drive.)
