Four Mitsubishi Customizations to Get Your Ride Big Results

Your Mitsubishi might be everything you needed fresh off the lot. To make the most of it -- to make it everything you want -- you'll have to do a few key upgrades. You're in luck: car or SUV, your ride's got a lot of prospects, and with the right parts and accessories, customizing it can even be pretty inexpensive.

Here's four great places to start.

Performance

Consider sport cars like Mitsubishi Lancer and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. They were speed-demons in their days; 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer, for instance, could get a spirited 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque, while 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, got a hard-charging 291 horsepower and 300 pound-feet (with its Final Edition trim capable of 303 horsepower and 305 pound-feet).

Like any Mitsubishi model, though, they can still be modded for higher power ratings and a more exciting ride; all you'll need to do, usually, is install a turbocharger (or upgrade a turbo to a supercharger), swap out the factory air intake for a cold air intake, and substitute a performance air filter for the stock engine air filter. The finishing touch: a custom exhaust (a cat-back system, for example, with wider tubing and a high-flow catalytic converter).

Capability

Now consider an SUV like Mitsubishi Outlander. It's a dependable towing and hauling machine; the 2024 model, for example, can trailer up to 2,000 pounds, and it's got a sizable 64.3 cubic feet of cargo space. To get the most out of both, you'll need the right trailering accessories, plus a few of the best cargo accessories.

We're talking, for one, a ball mount and trailer ball for attaching both a tow hitch and a trailer coupler, not to mention security accessories like a hitch lock, hitch pin, safety pin, and anti-rattle kit, plus recovery accessories like a winch. Secondly, cargo trays for organizing things in the trunk, a cargo net to hold small items up off its floor, and a cargo cover to hide valuables almost in plain sight while you're out and about. Ideally, you should top off the install with a roof rack and crossbars: it'll make extra room on top of your vehicle, should you run out.

Interior

Take another model, the Mitsubishi Mirage. The 2024 model, for example, has an interior with plenty of room for customization. For one, in the way of electronics -- that is, by upgrading the 7.0-inch Smartphone-Link Display Audio (SDA) infotainment system, putting premium audio in place of the stock four-speaker setup, and adding an entertainment system for passengers (with a DVD or Blu-ray player and external LCD screens, for instance). Secondly, for comfort and investment protection -- namely, by putting custom seat covers on the factory fabric-and-faux-leather seats, adding all-weather floor mats to replace the stock carpet floor mats, and installing some sunshades for UV heat- and light-resistance.

Exterior

Now, think of another sports car, one like Mitsubishi Eclipse. By 2012, when it went out of production, it had some cool exterior perks -- darkened 18-inch wheels, for example, plus black side decals, fender flares, dual polished exhaust tips, high-intensity projector headlights on higher trims, and LED taillights; Spyder models had a power soft top, too -- but you can do one better.

First off, by putting on a body kit -- one with, say, more stylish front and rear bumpers, eye-catching trim and side skirts, and a more aerodynamic spoiler or wing. Second, by adding some custom emblems to show off your brand pride. Third, by upgrading wheels -- to, say, aluminum-alloys, or carbon-fiber. Fourth, by going for more unique lighting -- cutting-edge HID/Xenon, for example, or energy-efficient LED.
