Mitsubishi Windshield Wipers and Blades FAQ

What are Mitsubishi Wiper Systems Made up of?

A wiper motor, wiper arms with wiper blades, and a windshield washer pump. As it is on a Mitsubishi Outlander, so it is on other Mitsubishi cars and SUVs -- Mirage to 3000GT. The windshield wiper connects to a long, plastic wiper arm with a blade on it, and the arms themselves connect by way of a linkage; a switch gets it going -- put simply, gets the wiper arms swiping -- via a fuse and (sometimes) a relay.

Wiper arms are made to pivot on the end connected to or nearest the wiper motor, so the blades can clear away muck and debris on the windshield. The windshield washer pump's job, however, it to spray fluid from a reservoir onto the windshield to help loosen that crud so it can be swept away more easily.

What Kinds of Windshield Wiper Blades are There for a Mitsubishi?

The commonest are conventional, beam, and hybrid.

Conventional wiper blades are made of rubber or silicone. Attaching to a basic metal frame, they're ideal for everyday driving. You usually replace them seasonally -- about every six months.

Beam wiper blades are solid rubber, designed to conform to windshield contours more closely. They last a little longer than the conventional type. Hybrid wiper blades, relatedly, work like beam wipers, but their frames, being rubber-coated metal, are both more versatile and a bit more weather-resistant.

Any wiper blade's going to attach to a wiper arms by way of one or another connector. Hook connectors, for example, are U-shaped, they wrap around the rounded end of an arm, and they rotate. Clamp connectors, in contrast, are openings into which arms are inserted; they fasten on their sides to stay in place. Pin connectors, for another example, are horizontal holes through which pins on arms go, to hold blades in place.

What are the Signs Wiper Blades Need Replacing?

You may hear squeaking and chattering, and see streaks left behind while the blades run. You may notice cracking rubber, failing blade adhesive, the blades coming off the arms completely, or bent or broken frames. What's more, the pressure points on the blades may not seem to be making good contact with the windshield like they used to, and the blades may not be cleaning effectively as a result.

            The solution: get OEM replacements.

Why Buy OEM Wipers and Blades for Mitsubishi, vs. Aftermarket?

They're genuine Mitsubishi, top-quality and designed to fit right, like any exterior accessory you'd get on a new car from a Mitsubishi dealer. They're usually warrantied, too. Not so, a lot of aftermarket wiper systems.
