1. Add a Turbocharger or Supercharger
A naturally aspirated engine can only put out so many horses, and driven by only so many pound-feet of torque. A turbo, however, can compress excess air flowing into the engine's cylinders, meaning the engine can then take in more fuel. And a supercharger? It does the same job, but with a belt-driven compressor; unlike with a turbo, where you have to wait for boost pressure from exhaust gases to build, a phenomenon called turbo lag, you can get more power at a lower rpm, meaning sooner.
The result, in both cases? That richer air and fuel mixture combusts, increased power's produced, and overall efficiency's improved -- i.e., you get more horsepower and torque for a more exciting ride.
2. Put in a Cold Air Intake and Performance Air Filter
Cooler, denser air with a high flow rate is key to more and better-quality air for turbocharging or supercharging. Swapping out a factory air intake and engine air filter accordingly means helping one or the other help the engine produce more power. Both are easy to install, and with their help, you'll get a power bump with no need to plug an advance scan tool in to tune the ECU and risk voiding your Mitsubishi warranty.
3. Tack on a Nitrous Kit
One of these can boost horsepower pretty significantly, albeit temporarily, by heating nitrous oxide, breaking it down into nitrogen and oxygen and condensing and cooling air in the process, a lot like a cold air intake does. A lot of kits are bolt-on, meaning a breeze to install; just check your state and local laws beforehand to see if you can do the mod.
4. Upgrade the Camshaft
A performance camshaft, aptly nicknamed a "bump stick" for having lobes that help optimize intake and exhaust valve opening and closure, can mean a huge gain of tens to 100 horsepower or more. Of course, that's provided you put in custom lifters, too.
5. Mod the Exhaust
You've got two options here. One's to install a cat-back exhaust -- a system with wider tubing and a better muffler. The other's an upgraded header to replace the exhaust manifold -- one in stainless-steel, either a long-tube with better exhaust flow or short-tube. It'll offer increased gas flow because of straighter bends in its tubes. Just know it'll need an oxygen sensor in the factory location to be legal, and that dropping the catalytic converter and muffler, like many straight-pipe exhausts do, can mean ending up on the failing side of an inspection; consider installing a high-flow catalytic converter instead -- and whatever the mod, always double-check regulations to keep things above board and avoid legal trouble.
6. Soup Up the Brakes
More power means better acceleration, and that calls for the best stopping power you can get: sport brakes. Take, say, aluminum brake calipers and slotted carbon-ceramic brake rotors and brake pads, for example; they're almost always lighter-weight, and they can dissipate a lot more heat than everyday brakes.
7. Add Key Suspension Parts
A sports car suspension, for one, needs the works: tougher lowering coil springs, adjustable control arms or relocation brackets, larger sway bars, and performance shocks and struts, just to name a few things. They're paramount for everything from minimizing body roll to precision cornering and reducing the felt impacts of bumps and potholes.
8. Update the Fuel System
Other updates like forced induction or a bigger camshaft will have your engine making fuel demands you're going to have to meet. The first line of defense? A high-flow fuel pump and fuel injectors.
