Mitsubishi Air Intakes FAQ

What Does the Air Intake in a Mitsubishi Do?

It draws air into the manifold on the engine, right through to the cylinders, in a process called induction. The fuel system sprays gas from the fuel injectors through the intake valves at the same time. The air and gas mix at the right ratio, the spark plugs ignite the mix, it combusts, and the engine produces the power it runs on. As it is in a Mitsubishi Lancer, so it is in a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and so on.

How Does an Air Intake Work?

Let's stick with the Lancer example. First, the car's engine air filter captures airborne contaminants, before they can get into the motor. Then, a mass airflow sensor works with an air metering system and oxygen sensors to get the air levels right. Together, these parts make induction happen and the exhaust work, and they feed info about both back to the engine control unit (ECU). One kind of intake works a little differently, though: a cold air intake.

How Do Cold Air Intakes Work?

They often simply relocate the engine filter. In the case of that Lancer, say, to just outside the engine compartment, above one of the car's wheel wells or near one if its fenders. This placement allows taking in cooler, denser, and therefore higher-quality air, the result being a slight bump in engine power output. (This is a boon for sports cars like, say, Eclipse.)

What are the Signs of a Failing Air Intake?

They include a Check Engine light on the dash, and the engine revving unusually fast or idling abnormally. See any of them, and you should plug in a code reader and run an inspection. If error codes tell you to replace the air intake, do it ASAP (or get it taken care of at a Mitsubishi dealer).

We carry the OEM replacement parts you need. They're Mitsubishi-quality, so they're guaranteed to fit and work right the first time, unlike aftermarket parts.
