All About Sensors for Mitsubishi Air Intakes and Fuel Systems
The air intake and fuel system in your Mitsubishi need many different types of sensors to run right. Each has a different job. Here are the basics of a few of the commonest -- what they are, what they do, and the signs that they're going bad.
Oxygen (O2) Sensors
An O2 sensor measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases coming from the engine by comparing detected O2 concentration to ambient O2. Doing so, it helps determines the engine's proper ratio of air to fuel, relaying that info to the engine control unit (ECU) to regulate fuel metering and emissions control. Usually, vehicles have two of them: one in front of the catalytic converter in the exhaust system, and one in the back. You'll know an oxygen sensor going bad from a lit Check Engine light on the dash and worsening fuel efficiency.
Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensors
A MAF sensor, found either near the engine air filter or on the filter's box, measures how much air enters the engine, sending the information to the ECU, which uses it to determine how much fuel to use. A failing one, you'll know from rough idling, the engine hesitating, stalling, or otherwise not running right, and a lit Check Engine light.
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensors
A MAP sensor, normally fitted to the manifold or its vacuum hose, works with the ECU to measure pressure inside the intake manifold and map spark advance and how much fuel to deliver. In other words, it tells the vehicle's computer how much power is being demanded of the engine. You'll know a faulty one from a dashboard Check Engine light, lack of engine power, misfires, overheats, hesitation when speeding up, idling roughly, poor fuel economy, the smell of gasoline when the engine's idling, poor engine performance, difficulty starting, and a failed emissions test.
