Mitsubishi Brake Pads and Shoes FAQ

Both act as friction-generators; brake pads contact brake rotors, while brake shoes contact brake drums. The resistance created, your Mitsubishi uses to slow its wheels down, eventually stopping its tires turning.

Brake Pads vs. Brake Shoes: What's the Difference?

Brake pads are the textured plates mounted atop the brake calipers in disc brake systems. There are four kinds: organic ideal for everyday driving on average roads in typical weather; ceramic for driving in more diverse conditions; metallic/semi-metallic for higher durability and heat- and brake fade-resistance; and highly resilient carbon-fiber for superior performance at higher temperatures and the best stopping power you can get.

Brake shoes are the coarse, crescent-shaped welded steel plates in drum brake systems. There are four types: the everyday kind, which press the inner surface of a drum; the kind that press to a drum's outside (as in clasp brakes); the kind that clamps drums in pairs (as in pinch brakes); and the kind that's actually a flexible belt that wraps around the drum (as in band brakes).

When Should I Change the Brake Pads or Shoes in My Mitsubishi?

That depends on where you drive most often, and how. Usually, you replace brake pads every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so, while brake shoes, you change at least once a year, or every 50,000 miles or so. Otherwise, do so when you see the signs it's time.

Signs of bad brake pads include warning lights on the dash, worn-out or damaged pads, your vehicle whining or vibrating when you brake, grinding noises (indicating warped or damaged rotors), and taking longer to slow down and stop. Signs of bad brake shoes include strange noises like scrapes and squeaks when stepping on the brakes, taking longer to stop, and parking brake problems (e.g., one that's loose or isn't working right).
