There are many types of transmissions for Mitsubishi vehicles these days -- continuously variable (CVT), dual-clutch (DCT), and more. In just about any case, though, one's either going to be manual or automatic. If you prefer to "drive stick" for practical experience, plus the exciting hands-on feel, you probably prefer a manual.

Unlike an auto transmission, which has a fluid coupling (torque) converter in its gearset, which connects the engine and transmission and shifts gears using fluid pressure, a manual transmission has a clutch, and it lets you select gear ratios. How it works is simple. You press the clutch pedal, an input shaft separates, you shift into gear, a linkage connects a locking collar and an output shaft, you release the clutch, the input shaft re-engages, and the output shaft turns. You continue driving, and the engine stays within its rpm range (below its "redline").

A faulty manual transmission, you'll know by a few signs. For one, a clutch that feels slippery or otherwise unusual. Secondly, the engine revving high. Third, a burning smell following releasing the clutch. Fourth, grinding or other noises when you shift. Other symptoms of a bad manual: a delayed feel when changing gears, and not being able to get into the right gear.
