About the Mitsubishi Starion

With DNA from Japan's legendary Mitsubishi GTO, the Starion is one speed-demoniac sports car. Even as early as its 1990 release, it was already making a name for itself as a model of craftsmanship belying an enthusiast's expertise. For one, it was known for its powerful performance, owing to packing turbocharged engines like the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 of VR4 fame, plus all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and an active aero package that helped make it an adrenalized thrill-ride, road to track. Secondly, it was a paragon of appointments, with tech and luxury features at the bleeding edge of the heyday of performance cars of 1990s -- everything from leather seats and air-conditioning to a CD player. Furthermore, it was uniquely styled, with a design bordering on iconic -- sometimes retro, occasionally future-facing, always unmistakably Mitsubishi. Above all, however, it was affordable, leaving plenty of cash for customization fresh off the lot.

Mitsubishi Starion FAQ

What Does the "Starion" in Mitsubishi Starion Mean?

Contrary to popular belief, not "stallion." It's a portmanteau, combining "Star" and "Arion," with Arion referencing a Greek-mythological racehorse of the hero Hercules, one descended from Poseidon and Demeter. It's suggestion: the car's predisposition to high performance, thanks to features like capable naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, a rear-wheel drivetrain (RWD), a five-speed manual transmission, a limited slip differential, a MacPherson strut suspension, and front and rear sway bars, among others.

Is the Starion Fast?

Yes; the 1982 model topped out at 135 mph and could hit 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds -- great for its time. You can improve the speed of yours by cutting weight, modding the exhaust, and updating the suspension -- namely, installing lighter alloy wheels, high-performance tires, carbon-fiber body parts, a high-flow exhaust, and stiffer coil springs.

How Much Horsepower Does a Starion Have?

Early on, anywhere from 150 to 197, depending on what turbo the car had -- in other words, plenty for a smaller sports car. You can increase horsepower by upgrading to a supercharger, adding a cold air intake, and swapping out for a performance air filter.

How Can I Improve the Resale Value of My Starion?

Protect your investment. For one, replace your factory floor mats -- put in all-weather floor mats -- and install custom seat covers and sunshades. They'll shield everything from dirt, muck, and UV heat, respectively.

The key, though, is keeping up with regular maintenance and taking care of any common problems the car has that come up, and using OEM parts and accessories for both.
